Kinsale: a shared history between Ireland and Spain

Blog

Did you know that Kinsale has a historical connection with Spain?
Our students visited Kinsale, a coastal town with an important Spanish heritage.

The historical connection centres on the battle of 1601–1602, when around 3,000 Spanish soldiers, led by Juan del Águila, occupied the town to support the Irish against England.

Although they were besieged and defeated, this episode created a lasting historical link between both countries. Places such as Castlehaven still commemorate the landing and Spanish support today.

Discovering Ireland also means learning about its history and the connections that unite us.
