A Visit to Cobh

Blog

Cobh is a seaport town on the south coast of County Cork. It is on the south side of Great Island in Cork Harbour, Ireland’s only cruise terminal. It has been given different names throughout history: Cove (the cove of Cork), Queenstown and Cobh (a gaelicisation of “Cove”).

Tourism is the main activity in Cobh. Large cruise liners visit Cobh each year, mainly during the summer. Tourist attractions are focused on the maririme and emigration legacy of the town, including the Cobh Heritage Centre, Titanic Experience, Spike Island tours and St. Colman Cathedral. The town has remained quite unchanged since RMS Titanic departed from Cork Harbour in 1912.

One of the main tourist attrarctions in Cobh is West View, the row of colourful houses stretching up a steep street which are known as the Deck of Cards. Everyone wants to take a photograph of them with St. Colman Cathedral in the background.

Cobh is home to plenty of history surrounding the Titanic. Titanic Experience is a museum housed in the former ticket office for White Star Line, who owned the ship. When visiting the museum, you will be given the name of one of the 123 passengers who boarded the Titanic in Cobh. After the experience, you will learn if the person whose name you were given survived.

The most popular monument in Cobh is, undoubtedly, St. Colman’s Cathedral. It is not that old, as it was only completed in 1919, but it is absolutely breathtaking, standing high on the hill above most of the city, dominating the skyline.

Our students and Maria del Mar didn’t miss the chance to visit all those attractions and finally climbed the hill to visit the Deck of Cards after having visited St. Colman’s Cathedral and Titanic Experience. It was a great day despite bad weather.

At Ireland Experience we offer our students a total immersion in the culture, history and customs of Ireland, and especially of Cork, a wonderful city. Contact us and join this great family.
