Christmas in Ireland

Blog

In Ireland, Christmas is a time for family and friends to come together and celebrate the holiday season. Many people in Ireland celebrate Christmas by participating in religious traditions. In the days leading up to Christmas, many towns and cities host festive markets and fairs. These events often feature live music, street performers, and food stalls selling traditional Irish treats like mulled wine and hot chocolate.

On Christmas Eve, many families attend a special midnight Mass known as the “Midnight Mass of the Nativity.” This service commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and is often accompanied by carols, hymns, and other religious music. After the Midnight Mass, many families return home to have a special Christmas Eve dinner together. This meal often includes traditional Irish dishes such as roast turkey with stuffing, ham, and potatoes. Many families also leave out a plate of food for Santa Claus and his reindeer.

Another tradition is the sending of Christmas cards. Many Irish people exchange cards with friends and family, often including a personal message. On Christmas Day, many families exchange gifts and spend the day together. Some families go for a walk to enjoy the winter scenery, while others stay at home and play board games or watch Christmas movies.

In the evening, many families gather together for a special Christmas dinner. This meal is often similar to the Christmas Eve dinner, but may also include additional dishes such as mince pies, Christmas pudding, and brandy butter.
