Staying with a native host family is the most interesting way to learn English, as well as an unforgettable experience on a personal level. However, an adjustment period is always needed. Here you have some useful advice so that you can successfully overcome the initial difficulties.

Bringing a welcome present for the host family is a good way to break the ice. It doesn’t have to be expensive. It can be something that relates to your cultural roots, to Spain or to your hometown (a book, music, or why not, food?)

One of the difficulties that some of our students refer to is that, when they arrive, they find it difficult to understand people speaking. They also feel that their English is not fluent. It is reasonable, if you are in Ireland with a host family, it is because you want to improve your English. That is why it is best to have a positive and participative attitude that favours coexistence and self-confidence. Things will flow without you trying.

Do not feel embarrassed when talking about your tastes, hobbies, your character or your favourite food. Your host family knows nothing about you but, this way, they will easily connect with you. In addition, they will value your gesture and effort and they will feel more comfortable. Keep your room tidy, participate in family meals and respect the schedules (sometimes they are very different from the Spanish ones). In short, accept the differences that you will be discovering. These differences are precisely what enriches the experience the most. Getting to Know a new culture, music or gastronomy, so different from ours, will make the initial difficulties disappear in a few days and you will also improve your English, your fluency, your vocabulary, etc. without realising.
